A Little History

The Old Rectory was built in 1919, immediately following the First World War. For 30 years, it was home to the Annetts, one of Salisbury's leading families, who still reside in Salisbury today. The house was originally known as "Fairstowe". In the 1950's the house was purchased by the church to serve as the earthly home of the rector of nearby St. Edmund's Church. As "The Rectory", it was first home to the Reverend Herbert Geoffrey Goodall, and later to Reverend John Henry Rumens. The tower of St. Edmund's can still be seen from our windows, although it is now the vibrant and popular Salisbury Arts Centre. In recent years, the house has become a family home again under the nameplate of The Old Rectory, and is now owned by Trish Smith and her family, who have converted it into the Bed and Breakfast facility that it is today.

The house still projects a feeling of its time as a happy, family environment, as well as a quiet, peaceful place of goodwill and spiritual reflection. The two combined make it a perfect place for the traveller looking for a quiet, comfortable, convenient stopping place on their journey of discovery through the South of England.
